The Structures at the Centre of our ‘Silent No More’ Garden

As we continue our journey towards RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, we want to share an early look at the architectural centrepiece of our ‘Silent No More’ Garden, designed by Darren Hawkes in collaboration with Ruddy Joinery.

Positioned on Main Avenue, the garden has been conceived as a space that will draw visitors in and encourage pause. At its heart stand four monumental sculptural forms, each 2.5 metres tall. Abstract and architectural, they subtly reference the curves and protective qualities of the female anatomy without literal interpretation. The intention is not to replicate the body, but to echo its strength, shelter and resilience.

The design takes inspiration from the work of Eduardo Chillida and his exploration of enclosure and interior space. Darren responded to our brief by creating forms that define a sheltered centre without closing it off. There are clear entry points from all sides, reinforcing that this is an inclusive space, open to everyone. The gently overhanging tops of the structures enclose the space below, forming a womb-like environment that offers both shelter and privacy.

The structures are being manufactured by long-time Lady Garden supporters Ruddy Joinery. Each one is constructed from hundreds of precision CNC-cut plywood components, layered and secured with steel brackets to achieve the curved geometry while ensuring strength and durability. This is a complex build: the forms must withstand transport, craning and installation, as well as the demands of a high-profile public show.

They will arrive at RHS Chelsea in May 2026 fully assembled and will be craned into position on Main Avenue. Once installed, they will be rendered in terracotta clay. This finish unifies the structure visually, protects the surface and gives the forms a warm, grounded quality that connects them to the earth and surrounding planting.

For the Lady Garden Foundation, this garden is about impact. The scale of the forms ensures they will be visible from a distance. Their arrangement ensures they create privacy once entered. Strong outside. Protective inside.
